Bali on My Mind

It’s been nearly 10 years…

Since the last time I set foot on the Land of The Gods aka Bali aka paradise.

10 friggin years, people!

Holy molly!

I still remember vividly how it was the last and the first time I was there for a short weekend.

I was still working in Jakarta at the time in 2004 when I got an offer to fly to Bali for a job interview in a hotel. Me, a girl who never been to Bali? Of course I jumped at that opportunity.

So off I went on an evening flight after work one Friday back in August 2004. As I stepped out of the plane, I inhaled deeply. Taking all the fresh air in. Away from crowded Jakarta for a chance. The hotel sent a driver to pick me up. He showed up with a board with my name on it. That felt strange but exciting at the same time.

They had prepared a room for me in the hotel. When I checked in, they said the the initial room for me will not be ready until the next day so they put me up in a twin bed room. Still quite a nice room actually and I didn’t mind at all. It was all free after all!

The next morning, after an early breakfast and not enough sleep from all the excitements, I was whisked away to downtown Denpasar. A psychology test awaits me. The test took all day long to finished and I knew I flunked it even long before I found out. It was the most extensive psychology test I had ever taken.

When I returned to the hotel, they informed me that I can now move to the room they had assigned me to. It was like a private bungalow. It was beautiful and very quiet. Fabulous!

But I had things to do…hey, I was there for a job interview! So I spent the rest of the day in and out of interviews with some of the hotel’s managers.

It was a long day.

Yet they made it memorable, the hotel. They invited me to enjoy their famous Balinese performance while I enjoyed Indonesian buffet dinner by their lush beachfront garden.

Before I arrived in Bali, I told myself to give my best and I thought I did just that on that long Saturday. Exhausted but realizing that’s the last night I had in Bali, I braved myself and ventured out for a stroll alone after dinner. The hotel is in Legian Kuta area so I just took a walk and look around.

The next day felt like a ‘bonus’ for me as they allowed me to just enjoy my last day there. So to the beach I went.

Morning by the beach

I sipped some gin and tonic playing tourist. Took some more stroll around the area before I flew back home to Jakarta.

So there you go…my very short unforgettable visit to Bali.

I didn’t score the job but it sure was an unforgettable experience.

Maybe it is time to plan for a real vacation time in Bali? Hmmm….

Have you ever been to Bali? What’s your favorite things to do there?

That is a totally amazing experience! I’ve never had that type of treatment for an interview. That would be so worth it. Definitely an unforgettable experience.

Bali is full of fun and adventure, sadly the beach is now getting dirty and people throw rubbish everywhere 🙁
Try to visit Lombok while you are in the area
