Wellness Wednesday: 5 Biggest Health Myths Debunked

5 Biggest Health Myths Debunked

I know this is February already, are you still committing yourself to live healthier? Congrats if you do! You are on the right track then. Unfortunately, there are still so many myths out there when it comes to fitness and health out there. It is important for us to recognize these myths. Why? To help us live healthier of course and make better choices.

5 Biggest Health Myths Debunked

[Tweet “5 Biggest Health Myths Debunked #WellnessWednesday #Gowellnessday”]

  1. Women Are Not Suppose to Lift Weights – You Will Ended up Looking Like a Man

Oh, my! This is one of the biggest myths out there. Here in Indonesia or even overseas, there are still a lot of women who completely scared off by the sights of barbells or dumbbells that weigh more than 4-6 pounds. Why? Because they are scared they will bulk up and look like Hulk! There are also men who tell women to stay off the weights and this drives me nuts. I met a personal trainer once at my gym who told me to not lift anything heavier than 10 pounds because I will look too manly. I wanted to poke him in the eye! Sometimes insecure men prevent their women to lift weights because most of them can’t even lift that heavy. Hah!

So let’s break this longtime myth, shall we? Gaining muscles is not a walk in the park. It is actually easier to lose weights than to gain muscles. One of the reasons why women will not end up looking like Hulk when they lift weights is because we simply do not have as much testosterone as men. But what about those bodybuilder type of women who look like men you asked? Well, dear then they are most definitely are using either steroids or human growth hormones.

Personally, I have experienced how awesome it is to pack on some muscles on me – which I need to get back – besides making my self-esteem went up, muscles actually burn fat even when we are not working out. How awesome is that?

What actually happens when you start lifting weights

Another benefit of weight training for women is we will not get osteoporosis easily. So ladies, let’s pick up those weights!

  1. Don’t Eat Dinner!

There are so many women who still believe this myth and actually feels guilty when they ate their dinner. The problem here is really what we choose to eat, if we eat instant noodles for dinner then oh well that’s going to harm you in the long run. The best ‘time frame’ for dinner is different for everyone but for me, I find it best if I eat my dinner before 7 PM. 7:30ish is pushing it a bit too close but I cut myself some slacks if I have to do this. My choice would be high protein and healthy fat types of dinner. Going to bed hungry will most likely make you eat you overcompensate with breakfast later on.

  1. Avocado Will Make You Fat

Poor avocado is being unjustly labeled as bad especially here in Indonesia. What is sinful is actually what you add with the avocado like sweet condensed milk, sugar, syrup etc like what you will find on the typical avocado juice here in restaurants/café. Avocado has one of the best healthy fats and it is recommended to have 1 avocado a day. Look at this picture.

Benefits of Avocado

  1. Cold Water Makes Your Tummy Fat

High humidity level and the heat of Jakarta makes cold water a mandatory for me and a lot of people. It just feels so refreshing doesn’t? But is it really cold water that makes you have those belly fat? Nope! What makes our tummy get fat is actually those crunchy deep fried snacks or those processed foods with high sugar content. It’s not about hot/cold the water that we drink but it’s about the amount of water we drink. The more we sweat, the more we need to drink.

  1. Cardio Every Day

Cardio is important but it doesn’t mean you will have to spend 1 hour every day on a treadmill. Zumba every day will guarantee to make you skinny. Yes, skinny but you are losing your muscles too. Still scared of muscles? Please try to change that view a little at a time and try to gain some to experience it yourself. Long cardio is actually not good for you. Fat loss is more important than just weight loss. Why? Because you can be skinny with a high body fat level and it is actually more dangerous. As you already know high body fat can cause stroke, heart disease, etc.  So, if you enjoy cardio then go for it but try to add resistant training to your repertoire. You will enjoy the results too.

I honestly wish these myths will go away but I think it is far more important to share awareness instead of scaring people off, don’t you think? What is the biggest fitness/health myths you ever heard?

5 Mitos Kesehatan Terbesar Yang Harus Dihapus:

  1. Perempuan Jangan Angkat Beban Nanti Jadi Kayak Laki

Fat loss is more important than just weight loss. Kenapa?

*Women Are Not Suppose to Lift Weights – You Will Ended up Looking Like a Man*

Aku sebenarnya mau ingin ikutan, tapi…. pasti banyak lupanya 😀

  2. February 4, 2015 / 9:23 pm

I agree with #1 most especially. I lift weights but I don’t have those big scary muscles! It helps keep my arms and butt toned.

  3. February 4, 2015 / 9:44 pm

well, i did not know that avocado can make you fat, that’s interest me since it’s one of my fave too.

    • February 4, 2015 / 10:01 pm

No Melandria, I think you misunderstood what I wrote. That is the myth that avocado can make you fat but the truth is avocado is one of the healthiest fruit you can have 🙂

  4. February 4, 2015 / 10:01 pm

One of my long term health goals is free from osteoporosis but I have diastasis recti. Should I lift weight, Maureen. I’m curios about it. Thanks..

  5. February 4, 2015 / 10:37 pm

well, actually cardio burns fat so it actually does give fat loss results, no? just that it doesn’t help with muscle development so it’s not sustainable.
and i never heard of people telling me drinking cold water will give tummy fat! is it a common myth? but i really refrain from drinking cold drinks though, because cold drinks aren’t really good for us, especially women during our time of the month.

  6. February 5, 2015 / 12:30 am

Haha incidentally, my sister prodded me to eat at some restaurant, and when she brought the order, I was surprised she only had some fruits. And she said “I could have ordered, or wanted to have avocado. But I didn’t because it’s gonna be a lot of calories!” ahahaha hmmm will tell her to read this.

  7. February 5, 2015 / 3:30 am

Some of these are so farfetched. Its weird how people actually believe this. Great Post and thanks for sharing

  8. February 5, 2015 / 8:57 am

This is very eye-opening, but I can’t believe people still think they are true! I love avocados and they are one of the biggest superfoods we have.
And my sister lifts weights and she looks fantastic!

  9. February 5, 2015 / 3:59 pm

I wonder why do people believe this things? How can avocado make you fat?

  10. February 5, 2015 / 4:51 pm

Padahal alpukat itu makanan wueenaaakkk. Yg bikin gendut kalo alpukat paket gula. Kalo eike skip dinner, alamat ga bisa tidur. Jadinya ya makan selalu lahhh ^_^

  11. February 5, 2015 / 6:15 pm

This is hilarious because my man avoids avocado like the plague because he heard it was bad for your cholesterol – I love it! Yet he eats bacon, prawns, etc. Go figure.

  12. February 5, 2015 / 8:28 pm

Thank you for linking up to #WeightLossWednesday! 🙂 and for allowing me to link up to you too!
A great, thought provoking post – personally, I love doing weights and don’t see why women shouldn’t be able to do them! Bodybuilders have a completely different routine to what any normal gym goer would have so there is no need to worry about crazy muscles!! Sim @ simslife.co.uk x

  13. February 5, 2015 / 10:20 pm

I guess lifting weights is ok but we should limit just for toning unless. Water is a way to balance the system so it’s an important component in our diet.

  14. February 6, 2015 / 6:26 am

It’s amazing that today we have access to information like never before yet people cling to myths. Like all carbs are bad. Ugh. I love avocados and I love strength training. I haven’t bulked up yet. 🙂 Thanks for sharing and I’m looking forward to participating in WW next week.

  15. February 6, 2015 / 2:22 pm

You certainly made mi think about picking up some weight training, I really don’t want osteoporosis, great advice!

  16. February 6, 2015 / 6:48 pm

These create wrong notions and they ought to be avoided for what is the fact.
