“Family and friends may not always support your healthy lifestyle. Your time for exercise and effort for eating healthy can threaten people in your life. Don’t be sabotaged. This is your journey. The best and most important decision, your health. Encourage them to join you. Couples, family, friends who train together stay together.” – Karen Ficarelli
Ain’t that the truth?!
Throughout my journey to be fit and healthy, there’s negative people and there are those who stick by my side, who encourage me to push harder, who cheered me on, who inspired me. These are the people that I CHOOSE to surround myself with.
Much like life in general isn’t?
But let me tell you how awesome it is to have friends who support you on being healthy and strong!
Sunday, 22 July 2012… from my sheer venting out session to my all time fitness inspiration aka best friend, T, an idea was born. I was upset that my body fat percentage was still the same as last month. Apparently, she passed this along to her friend who is also a fitness and healthy junky. The guy, Ken, jumped into action and offered to train me at his place.
These people are so fit, so toned, they are obviously on a different league than me. I.chickened.out and declined his generous offer. Besides, I still have the trainer to work with.
Ken then came up with something new. A challenge for me and I took it right off the bat.
No carbs for 3 months!
Yeah, you heard that right. No carbohydrates for 3 friggin’ months! (as I’m typing you this I’m on my 9th day)
Me and my enthusiastic self! It wasn’t until I gave him the “Okay, I can do that!” that it sinks in of how I am gonna miss my red rice and those pasta! He quickly gave me the run downs of what to do, what food to avoids, what food to load up. Not only that, he demanded that I send him pictures of every meals for his approval. Talk about strict! Alrighty, Coach K!
Inspired by this, we created a group on our cell phones and added our other close friends. So far we are 7 people strong. All friends…all trying to live a healthy lifestyle. How fantastic!
So all of us started posting our every meals for the Coaches approval. It is hilarious, I tell you. We all love to eat, we all love good foods but from Monday – Friday we all are trying to live healthy, eat clean and train mean.
Friends Who Work Out Together Party Together
Last Saturday, we had our first workout together at Ken’s place. A couple of days before the actual big day, he told us he will set up circuits. When we asked what is exactly this circuits are. He just said show up and be ready and DO NOT QUIT! Oh my Lord…enough said, some of us got pretty nervous.
The big day arrived and I was there early, followed by my awesome single mama friend, Eryka. Then another guy, M showed up with his girlfriend. M works with Coach K and they workout together a whole darn much so he was the first victim as we watched in horror of the things he did. Burpees…oh the holy burpees. Just watching him doing that made me want to crawl home.
But heaven was good to us all that day. Burpees was reserved for M only because he’s used to it although the look on his face says he’d rather sit down and munch on dozens of pork satays. Hah!
Eryka and I were the next two victims.
The torture method of choice by our Coaches K & T were: Walking Lunges with Dumbbells, Push Ups, Thrusters, and Sit Ups. Sounds easy right? Uhm…not with 3 sets of 21, 15 and 9 reps. Believe me although the weights used were light, after awhile your legs, thighs, arms really started to burn.
The fun thing is, we did not do the whole set for each move all at once, instead you do a whole set of lunges-push-ups-thrusters-sit ups first then do the other set.
It was kicking my ass for sure, but so much fun because we were surrounded with friends who cheered us on and telling us we can do it when that push-ups about to kill me.
Finishing those 3 sets felt hella good. Just check out my face here! After the last few days of trying to meet the deadlines from work and the pressure, it felt incredible to welcome those post-workout endorphins!
All in all, we all had a kick of a workout that day. The funniest thing? After we were all done we started talking about food! One day, we’d finish our workout and go grab some delicious food together. Not only that, we talked about a weekend party plan.
“When you workout that hard, you deserves a drink!” – Coach T.
What an awesome group of friends I have! We plan to make this a regular thing to do. Oh and I’ve also will be working out with the help of Coach K from now on. Just waiting to get the whole schedule set up.
