Blogging With Integrity

Happy National Bloggers Day, Indonesia
Selamat Hari Blogger National, Indonesia!

I didn’t even realized such day existed since 2012 until Mbak Yo mentioned me on Twitter this morning thus, inspiring this post. Bedank, Mbak Yo!

How does it feels to be a blogger in Indonesia?
Bagaimana Rasanya Menjadi Blogger di Indonesia?

I’ve been blogging for um…*cough* eleven *cough* years and counting. Quite a long time. Back then the word blogger didn’t even exist I think or maybe it did. Anyway, that’s not the point.

Looking back, blogging has opened doors for me that leads to many exciting experiences and not so exciting ones.

What does blogging means to me?
Makna Blogging buat saya?

I did not set out to conquer the world and become a blogging queen – although that would be pretty awesome. It all started from the love of words, the love of writing, the love of stringing words together that express my thoughts and feelings.

I just love writing.
Saya cinta menulis.

I remember when I was still in Junior High and I entered countless of writing contests in school and proudly announced to my family that one day I will become a writer.

The essence of it all is my passion for writings.
Dasarnya ya karena kecintaan saya dalam menulis.

My blog became a home to display my writings. It connects me to people from near and far. From South Africa down to New Zealand. From Jakarta to America. Blogging helps me heals. Blogging connects me to single moms in Indonesia resulting in the existence of Single Moms Indonesia.

Blogging makes the world smaller. It fits into our palms literally through our smart phones/gadgets.
Blogging membuat dunia jadi semakin kecil yah. Muat di tangan kita via smart phones/gadgets.

As an Indonesian blogger, I am in awe at how fast the growth of blogging has been going here. More and more companies are realizing how valuable blogger can be for their brands. Seeing bloggers being acknowledge is pretty awesome and made me proud to be a blogger!
Menyaksikan bagaimana bloggers semakin diakui bikin saya bangga loh jadi blogger.

Blogging then becomes quite a competitive grounds. Everyone wants to make money from blogging. Who doesn’t? And I do understand the needs to make extra income, especially at these times.

The first time I monetized my blog I felt a bit awkward. I felt like I was selling myself short. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot. I now follow my instincts when it comes to deciding who to collaborate/work with. I’ve been blessed to be able to work with some amazing brands, but I also learned to say no.
Saya ngerasa aneh banget loh waktu pertama kali me-monetized blog. Rasanya seperti ngejual diri banget.

Blogging Dengan Integritas

Blogging with Integrity

Monetizing my blog does not constitute me wanting to blast every inch of my blog with ads. It doesn’t mean I will take any review post/sponsored posts blindly. Why not you ask? It’s just my principles, my values that I will only do a review post of items/products/services that I had personally used/experienced from. I refused to put press releases because it does not fit my blog and my niche.

I truly believe in blogging with integrity. What is that even mean? It means if it is a sponsored post, there will be a clear and obvious statement that the post is a sponsored one. It means that I am not going to write a post boastfully praising product X while in reality they suck. No, first of all, I choose to only work with brands that are align with my brand, with what I believe. Nothing wrong with being selective. Also, I feel like I owe my readers to write honestly no matter what my opinion is about.

“But if you get paid, why not just write?” You may ask.
“Tapi kalo dibayar kenapa nggak nulis aja sih?” Mungkin pertanyaannya itu.

Yes, but it will not sit right with my soul. I tried that before in my early years of blogging. A rookie mistake that left me feeling like I sold my soul for some money. It’s a different story when you work with brands that have the same beliefs as you or in a cause that you support. In the blogosphere, it’s not just about the money, my dear.

I created a Disclosure Policy also PR Page and put it on here to show that I believe in blogging with integrity. My PR Page explains the kinds of brands I wish to collaborate with. I even took the pledge here.
Coba aja check websitenya.

I’ve been blogging for five years now and I’m finding my way on the monetization front. I don’t really do ads unless it’s BlogHer and that’s been a long relationship. And I’m learning to not say yes to every sponsored post! Sheesh, it took me awhile.

I started my blog for the same reasons. Then it just seemed to take on a life of its own 🙂

Great post. Of course, we want to make money with our blogs, but we have to be true to ourselves in the process. We have to be true to our readers, as well!
